An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation

An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation
This Second Edition of An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation has been extensively revised to address the fundamental study planetary atmosphere and quantitative measurement of the interactions of solar planetary atmosphere and terrestrial radiation with molecules, aerosols, planetary atmosphere and cloud particles in planetary atmospheres. It contains 70 new material, much of it stemming from the investigation of the atmospheric greenhouse effects of external radiative perturbations in climate systems, planetary atmosphere and the development of methodologies for inferring atmospheric planetary atmosphere and surface parameters by means of remote sensing. Liou`s comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of atmospheric radiation was developed for students, academics, planetary atmosphere and researchers in atmospheric sciences, remote sensing, planetary atmosphere and climate modeling.Key Features*Balanced treatment of fundamentals planetary atmosphere and applications*Includes over 170 illustrations to complement the concise description of each subject*Numerous examples planetary atmosphere and hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Fundamentals Of Atmospheric Radiation

Fundamentals Of Atmospheric Radiation
This textbook fills a gap in the literature for teaching material suitable for students of atmospheric science planetary atmosphere and courses on atmospheric radiation. It covers the fundamentals of emission, absorption, planetary atmosphere and scattering of electromagnetic radiation from ultraviolet to infrared planetary atmosphere and beyond. Much of the book applies to planetary atmosphere. The authors are physicists planetary atmosphere and teach at the largest meteorology department of the US at Penn State. Craig T. Bohren has taught the atmospheric radiation course there for the past 20 years with no book. Eugene Clothiaux has taken over planetary atmosphere and added to the course notes. Problems given in the text come from students, colleagues, planetary atmosphere and correspondents. The design of the figures especially for this book is meant to ease comprehension. Discussions have a graded approach with a thorough treatment of subjects, such as single scattering by particles, at different levels of complexity. The discussion of the multiple scattering theory begins with piles of plates. This simple theory introduces concepts in more advanced theories, i.e. optical thickness, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry parameter. The more complicated theory, the two-stream theory, then takes the reader beyond the pile-of-plates theory. Ideal for advanced undergraduate planetary atmosphere and graduate students of atmospheric science.

Planetary boundary layer - The planetary boundary layer (PBL) is an atmospheric layer where physical quantities (flow velocity, temperature, moisture etc) are considerably affected by rapid fluctuations (Turbulence) resulting from the flow interaction with the earth's surface. The atmosphere above the PBL is called free atmosphere as it is generally free of turbulence.

Space manufacturing - Space manufacturing is the production of manufactured goods in an environment outside a planetary atmosphere. Typically this includes conditions of microgravity and hard vacuum.

Rossby number - The Rossby number, named for Carl-Gustav Arvid Rossby, is a dimensionless number used in describing geophysical phenomena in the oceans and atmosphere. It characterises the ratio of inertial forces in a fluid to the fictitious forces arising from planetary rotation.

Aerobraking - Aerobraking is a technique used by spacecraft in which it uses drag within a planetary atmosphere to reduce its velocity relative to the planet.
